Unit 16 Understanding Specific Needs in Health and Social Care

Unit 16 Understanding Specific Needs in Health and Social Care

Pearson BTEC HNC/D Diploma Health and Social Care – Unit 16 Understanding Specific Needs in Health and Social Care

Unit 16 Understanding Specific Needs in Health and Social CareThis is solution of Icon college Understanding Specific Needs assignment. It is based on the dementia disease, in the assignment all analysis would be done keeping in the case study example of Mr. Holland Park.

TASK 1: Understand perceptions of health, disability, illness and behaviour

1.1 Concepts of health, disability, illness and behaviour in relation to users of health and social care services

Health and social care is an important aspect in the lives of people. However, in recent times the perspective has changed a lot for the users of health and social care services. Earlier, any individual used to approach the health and social care services in case of urgent needs. But now, people are more aware about the routine check-up and importance of being fit. Similarly it is very important for Mr. Holland Park and his family to be very aware towards the importance and health and social care. It can play a huge role in improvement in his condition and take care of him. Mr. Holland Park is suffering from Dementia, and he tends to forget a lot of things which he used to do daily. The main area of concern is that apart from Dementia his is visually challenged and is hearing has also become poor. All the members in his family are so busy with their daily chores that nobody is able to give proper attention towards him. The misery he has to face daily due the visual impairment and hearing problem could be taken care at the health and social care centre. Thus, admitting him to health and social care centre would be really helpful, as all his needs can be fulfilled and somebody would already be present to take care of his demand and needs all the time (Helman, 2001).

1.2 Change in people’s perceptions of specific needs

Definitely there has been a change in the way people look at the individuals with specific needs. We can deduce the same with the help of the example of Mr. Holland Park. Generally, on an average, more than 30% people above the age of 90 are suffering from Dementia. SO, the earlier impression was very casual about the condition of Dementia in the minds of people. But now, with increases awareness and education, it has become very clear to the society that, the people suffering from Dementia need to be taken care properly and should be heard. Besides this, there is one more complexity to this. As with the case of Mr Holland Park, he is suffering from visual impairment and hearing problem, several other old aged people suffer with heart complexities, digestion problems and breathing problems etc. This, apart from Dementia, they already have a lot of things to care about. Thus, it is very important to take care of those. Fortunately the families of such people have become very vigilant regarding this and have been taking health of the health and social care centres for this.

People’s perception towards Dementia Patients improved

Moreover, with Mr. Holland Park has also reportedly involved in a couple of violent behaviours, which happens when a person wants to convey something and it goes unheard, then he starts searching some way or the other to convey his point. Thus, it is very important to understand his condition and in general the viewpoint of the society has been changing in regard to this (Fishbein, 2001).

1.2 Impact of legislation, social policy, society and culture on Health and Social care services

Legislative policies and social policies are very important for governing any sector in the country. Health and social care sector has also been facilitated by the legislative policies in many ways. Below are a couple of such examples.
Health and Social Care Act, 2012: It gives various rules and regulations that need to be followed for the service providers and the users of health and social care sector. It not only provides various guidelines to be followed by the sector so the proceedings are fair and smooth for the users of health and social care services, but also perform better facilities operations management and provides reforms related to the workers involved in the health and social care centres (Glasby, 2012).
National Health Service Act, 2006: It talks about the fund allocation to various sector places from the National Health Service under the supervision of Government. It ensures the smooth functioning of the health care services as far as the monetary stuff is concerned (Pollock, 2006).
Society and culture also has played an important role in the flourishing of the health and social care sector. The increase in awareness of people has impact the growth positively. Also, citing the example of Mr. Holland Park, we can deduce that the family has been very vigilant in this case and that by some extent reflects the overall changed attitude of the society.

TASK 2: Understand how health and social care services and systems support individuals with specific needs

2.1 Care needs of individuals with specific needs

It is very important to analyse the care needs of the individuals to manage the safeguarding operations. In this section, we would report about the understanding on the condition of Mr. Holland Park and how we can take care of him in an effective manner. Mr. Holland Park primarily has the problem of Dementia. At old age, the brain cells and cranial cells of human body start dying and people suffering with this tend to forget lot of things. So, proper care must be taken and the support staff at the care centre would be able to assist him with the important things like eating in time, taking bath and taking medicines at right time. Moreover, he is suffering from the problem of vision impairment. Especially during night times, when the individual would want certain things like water or something else, there is a case of accidental injury, this also needs to be taken care of. Apart from that, the hearing problem is also one critical issue. Mr. Holland Park has also showing challenging behaviour at some instances. It is very important to understand the mentality of the old man, where he is ignored most of the times by his family members due to their busy schedules. Thus, he is bound to try some tactics so that his actions would be noticeable. Also, sometimes, out of frustration the individual might attack or hurt somebody. Thus, we can sincerely analyse the specific care needs for Mr. Holland and can work out for a solution in the health and social care centre (Kitwood, 1992).

2.2 Current systems for supporting individuals with specific needs

For Mr. Holland Park, some psychological boosting would also do well, as he has been exhibiting challenging behaviour. There is facility proper interaction of the patients with others like staff or fellow patients, as long as it is comfortable for an individual. Several mechanisms are there which can be used to improve the condition of Mr. Holland Park. However, for typical cases and emergencies, the staff could use relaxing injections to keep the patient in check and keep him calm. These are the generic systems that can be used to take care of Mr. Holland Park (Sachs, 2004).

2.3 Services available in a chosen locality for individuals with specific needs

It is an obvious fact that any health and social care can be opted out for an individual keeping in view the facilities and utilities it can provide to the individual and family. So, services which are close to the locality are pretty handy for any service user. Proper medical facilities should be present in the health and social care centre, and quick assists on at least the existing disorders or ailments of the individual should be properly taken care at the centre itself. The social care centre should be approachable from bigger medical institutions, so that the patient could be quickly moved to there, in case of emergencies. The transportation facilities should be very good and there should enough ambulances dedicatedly working for that centre. The food should be healthy and hygienic. Manipulation on food items should be available based on the needs of the patient. All these conditions are rightly fulfilled at our health and social care centre. Thus, it is very good and safe for Mr. Holland Park to move to the centre for his own betterment (Cameron, 2010).

TASK 3: Understand approaches and intervention strategies which support individuals in specific needs

3.1 Approaches and interventions available to support individuals with specific needs

There are pre-defined approaches and strategies to take care of individuals with specific needs. First of all, Mr. Holland Park is suffering from multiple disorders, thus needs much attention. Problematic vision and hearing have an effect on him from time to time. Approaches may vary from light approaches to strict approaches based on the condition of the individual. Compared to the problem of Dementia and challenging behaviour by Mr. Holland Park, problems like vision and hearing impairment are moderate. There should be proper attention towards the problem of challenging behaviour, as he has reportedly attached a couple of times. So, it is important to calm him down and make him grow in self-confidence before strategizing interventions for him. Thus, we had focus upon the challenging behaviour initially and using different intervention strategies available to cure and control the dementia.
Cognitive therapy was an important intervention strategy that was for Mr Holland Park. Various means of stimulating senses were used in an attempt to activate his body neurons. Use of music and sounds was done in order to activate the sensory and motor neurons of Mr. Holland Park. This can simulate the hearing nerve which connects to the brain. Similarly olfactory nerves are also simulated by smell-therapy, in which different smells are given to the individual with specific needs. Along with that, the patient underwent good number of psychiatric sessions. All these intervention strategies and approaches were followed to improve the condition of Mr Holland Park (Beck, 1989).

3.2 Effectiveness of intervention strategies for an individual with specific needs

Intervention strategies used for the patient eyes upon improving the condition rather than focusing on permanent cure. However, all these seemed to have worked well for Mr. Holland Park. Though the vision impairment could not be cured alone by this therapy, but still involving the individual in activities of treatment gives mental strength to deal with it. Also, time to time diagnosis was done for his eyes and it was revealed that he could undergo various operative techniques available to cure the weakened eye sight. On the other hand we could improve the hearing tendency of Mr Holland Park with the help of hearing therapy. The pain in joints occurring to him due to gouty arthritis was also taken care of and massage was given on daily basis. The basic reason behind the impairment could also be the brain cell count decrease affecting the cerebrum of the patient which minimizes the senses of the body. Everything went as per the plan for Mr Holland Park and surprisingly, he had adhered to the instructions given to him. All this treatment also started to improve, as far as his challenging behaviour was concerned. Thus, these intervention strategies proved to be pretty effective for Mr Holland Park (Beck, 2004).

3.3 Potential impact of emerging developments on support for individuals with specific needs

For Dementia, there are various cases which are practically incurable. But emerging developments in medical research and social care has helped in keeping conditions of the patients in check. Dementia patients require more care in general than other patients in the care centre, as they might be having other disabilities or disorders as well. It is very tough to normalize the Dementia patient, but there are certain emerging technologies which can be continuously experimented upon the patients, keeping in view that it shouldn’t cause any harm to the patient. These kind of treatment can be tried upon, as most of the patients are the victims of ignorance by their families and it can be suited to help them by any possible way. Many doctors in health and social acre sector suggest to involve the patient in social media activities to keep them calm and busy. As it is pretty evident that there is no perfect cure for Dementia. Thus we need to keep the patients in close to normal mind-set (Perry, 1998).
If we face too much difficulty in handling the patients with challenging behaviour, then they can be kept isolated and their interaction with the psychiatrists increase. In more severe cases, shock therapies can be used. Injection for keeping the individual calm can also be given from time to time. These are the impacts that could be caused by the emerging developments available to support individuals with specific needs.

TASK 4: Understand strategies for coping with challenging behaviours associated with specific needs

4.1 Different concepts of challenging behaviour

This report would cover the strategies for coping with challenging behaviours associated with specific needs. Challenging behaviours is one of the typical cases which are pretty common in patients which are referred to health and social care units. Society had never accepted individual showing challenging behaviour .Due to proper education and awareness, the perspective of society has changed toward people showing challenging behaviour. People have long ago started believing that health and social care centres could provide much needed care and cure for the people displaying challenging behaviours. Challenging behaviour is either shown by children born with mental disabilities or by old people who feel isolated and alone in the society. Challenging behaviours can be categorized into various categories like showing aggression, the individual sows violent acts like beating the people and attacking them, throwing stuffs towards them trying hard to get noticed and showing frustration. Another kind of challenging behaviour includes people doing illegitimate sexual acts in public, which results in awkward situation in the society (Emerson, 2001).
There are various reasons for individuals show challenging behaviours due to various reasons. One very common reason is their isolation and lesser time dedicated by the family. People in old age suffering from various physical ailments like pain in joints and mental ailments like Dementia are very much dependent on others to do their daily activities. Sometimes, the family members do not have enough time to offer to them.
Also, being away from work causes these people to be bored and unoccupied. In such times, they started showing challenging behaviours out of frustration which gradually turns into another mental disorder. The brain cells start dying at old age and the sensory neurons become less effective. As discussed, the case with Mr Holland Park was same. He showed a couple of violent behaviours according to his son, and when he was admitted to the health and social care centre, his behaviour was automatically calmed down due to the quality of care and comfort he got. Thus, whatever be the reason behind the challenging behaviour by individuals, it is very important of health and social care centre to analyse it well and go with the conventions.

4.2 Potential impact of challenging behaviour on health and social care organizations

Dealing with individuals with challenging behaviour is very crucial and tough for any health and social care organization. It has mixed impacts on the health and social care organization. If they get a very tough case of challenging behaviour, then there is a danger for the fellow patients too, as it is an important step to socialize the patient to other people. But in case of severe symptoms, this cannot be done. As discussed the violent acts of any individual can be a threat to the fellow patients and the staff working for the care of that individual. It can sometimes lead to some accidents which could make a dent on the reputation of the health and social care unit. Thus, it is very important for the unit to take care of all the individuals displaying challenging behaviours with utter seriousness because any shortcoming might impact on a large scale. On a positive side, the improvements in the condition of individuals is also dedicated to the health and social care organization. We can take the example of Mr. Holland Park, which depicts that intensive care was done to calm him down and to make him believe that he is still important for them and all his needs would be taken care of. Thus, it’s a mix bag for the health and social care organization when it comes to impact of individuals with specific needs on the organization (Jenkins, 1997).

4.3 Strategies for working with challenging behaviours associated with specific needs

It is important for the health and social care centre to put the individuals with challenging behaviour in extreme care. For the, taking care of patients with challenging behaviour is very crucial. As the challenging behaviour shown at the centre by the patients could lead to problems with fellow patients. Challenging behaviour by any individual is shown when the individual wants to convey something strongly which he could be able to convey by any other means. It is very important to check the root cause of such behaviour before going ahead with a step which could seem harsh to the individual. Patient needs to be realized that all his needs and demands will be taken care of, if he can cooperate with the staff and others. However, there are cases of challenging behaviour which are more typical than the one which was exhibited by Mr. Holland Park. These are those patients which are mentally abnormal since their berth or because of some accidents. These are generally discarded by the society and they feel complete ignorance at times. There are certain damage or malfunctioning the important parts of cerebrum which could make the sensory neurons to malfunction. These patients needs complete care. For people which suffer from Dementia, the complexities are somewhat different from the ones discussed above. They are generally old aged people which also suffer from other disabilities and ailments like Mr. Holland Park is suffering from Gouty arthritis which causes pain in his joints apart from sensory impairments. One more challenge is to keep the other patients safe from the violent acts of individuals with challenging behaviours. If a patient exhibits extensive symptoms of challenging behaviour, he can be isolated and can be treated separately until the caretakers anticipate that he would no longer be a threat to other patients. This was an overview of a few strategies that can be used to help people with challenging behaviours by the health and social care units (Hastings, 1996).

TASK 5: Self-Evaluation

This part of the report will be dedicated to self-evaluation of all the tasks reported above.

Self-Evaluation: Task 1

The first task contains a report given by a Health and Social care worker to the family of Mr. Holland Park. The section properly describes the problems faced by the individual. Dementia has been described well both in general and in terms of the severity to an individual. The concepts of health, disability, illness and behaviour have been explained exemplifying the case of Mr. Holland Park. Analysis on changed perceptions of people toward using the facilities of health and social care sector is also done. Legislative policies which have an impact on the health and social care sector and the users of the services are also explained in brief.

Self-Evaluation: Task 2

In the second task, the basic aim is to deduce the services which health and social care sector could provide to the needy. This report is written keeping in mind that this should impress the family of Mr Holland Park further and they should confirm using the services of our health and social care centre. This part analyses the specific needs of Mr Holland Park in terms of Dementia and ailments he is suffering from. The current systems that can be beneficial in curing Mr Park are also discussed. Also, evaluation of services available at the locality of centre which is chosen by the family of Mr Holland Park is done.

Self-Evaluation: Task 3

Third task contains an audit report focussing on the progress of Mr. Holland Park. The key points are the approaches and intervention strategies that are followed by the health and social care centre to take care of the individuals with specific needs. The approaches and intervention strategies used for Mr. Holland Park and similar patients is discussed. Next section include analysis on the effectiveness of these intervention strategies. Lastly the potential impacts of emerging technologies on support for the health care patients is discussed. These impacts include both positive and negative aspects.

Self-Evaluation: Task 4

The final task focusses on the individuals with challenging behaviour. The main aim of the report is to have a write yup which explains the strategies for coping up with the individuals which show challenging behaviour. Firstly, kinds of challenging behaviours are reported. The possible reason behind an individual showing challenging behaviour are also enumerated. The impact of admitting individuals with challenging behaviour to a health and social care centre is also analysed and focus is on the better services to these patients or it might have a negative impact to the organization. The strategies for working with people with challenging behaviours are also discussed in the end. This completes the four reports for fulfilling the requirements of four tasks.

Conclusion

This has been reported with the case study on Mr. Holland Park who is suffering from Dementia and a few other complexities like mild arthritis, vision impairment, hearing problems etc. This has been deduced that how ignorance cause such individual top exhibit challenging behaviours. However, proper care and good quality of medication and facilitation at the health and social care centres could be very helpful for the individuals. At the same time, it is also important to take care of individuals with challenging behaviour because it could impact the environment of the medical care centre. Thus, we can conclude that the problems related to specific needs and challenging behaviour can be wisely tackled by good services provided by the health and social care centres.

Unit 3 HSC Workplace Assignment

Unit 3 HSC Workplace Assignment

Introduction

In today’s scenario the employers have understood their responsibilities and duties towards the health and safety of their employees and customer at their workplace. This has made them to create effective health and safety policies. This connects the employees with the employers with a sense of attachment and loyalty. In this assignment we will discuss about the health and safety policies, their implementation and effect on the employees about this healthy and safe working environment which results in the better working styles and outcomes for the organisation.

Task 1 A

At any workplace, the employer has a responsibility of taking health and social care of the employees along with the visitors at their premises like the suppliers and the customers. Therefore, in 1974 a Health and Safety act was implemented in United Kingdom which is a primary piece of legislation related to the work related health and safety of the employees. (niDirect Government Services, n.d.)

1.1 Update of the heath and policy manual at the workplace

Here it is required to update the health and safety manual of our workplace. By keeping the legislation ion mind, the manual for the work place is constructed.
Employer’s Duties:
Under Section 8, the employer at the workplace has a certain duties towards the safety of health of the employee. The organisation will take care of:
  • Provision of the safe workplace with the usage of safe plant and equipment.
  • Provision of the proper training to the employees regarding the health and safety.
  • Prevention of any improper behaviour which can put the safety and welfare of the employees at risk.
  • Provision of proper and protective clothes and equipment at work.
  • Appointment of a competent person as a safety officer of the organisation.

Employee’s Duties:
There are certain duties which are set out under section 13 for employees and the organisation will take care of:

Risk assessment and safety statement:
Under the safety and welfare Act 2005, the employer of the organisation needs to carry out a risk assessment which will include all the hazards present in the workplace, identify the risk arising from those hazards and plan the steps to deal with those hazards. They need to make the statement as well that contains the details of the people responsible for the safety issues at the workplace. The employees should be given these statements and regular reviews should be done by the employer.
Protective equipment and measures:
The employer needs to tell the about all the risks that occur while wearing or working on the equipment in the workplace. The employer needs todeliver proper training to the employees before using any risky equipment and will provide all safety wears like clothing, headgear, footwear, gloves eyewear if necessary. In the same time the employee needs to take care of their own safety while using the risky equipment.
Reporting accidents:
All the accidents at the work place should be reported to the employer and the employer will take charge and responsibility that the accident is not repeated. If the employee is missing for three consecutive days, the employer should consider him as missing and report for him.
Health and safety leave:
Proper provision of maternity leave for the pregnant employees should be carried out in a separate risk assessment. If there are certain risks with the pregnancy, the employee should move out or removed. If both the cases are not possible, the employee should be given special leave till maternity.
Health and cleanliness:
Proper cleanliness, temperature, ventilation should be provided so that the employees are physically fit to perform at the work place.
Health and safety and young people:
The employees under 18 years should be considered in a different risk assessment and should be carried out before the employment of the young people and if the risk can arise due to the lack of experience, the young people should not be employed.
Bullying:
If there is any report regarding the bullying among the employees, the employer should establish proper procedures for dealing with such reports because ignoring such reports can damage the employee.

Unit 4 Personal and Professional Development In Health

Unit 4 Personal and Professional Development In Health

Unit Description

This is solution of Hamilton college personal and professional Development Assignment which is related to HND Health and Social Care Course.

Task 1

1.1 Compare personal values and principles with the principles of support for working in health and social care

Unit 4 Personal and Professional Development In Health and Social CareHealth and social care is one of the biggest sectors and it is seeing rapid change. Government has introduced new initiatives for the development of this sector and for making it very high profile. This sector encourages everyone to live health life and to prevent themselves from illness. It gives very personal satisfaction to the employees working in this field. Helping someone or curing someone is the best service we can provide to anyone. This sector consists of organizations from both public and private sector. Hospitals, nursing homes, dental practices etc. are part of this sector (Petrova, 2006).
Working in a health care sector is not an easy task. You need to very strong physically and emotionally. Workers should be able to handle stress to work in this type of environment. Personal values and principles of workers are very important in this sector. This sector deals with the health and lives of individuals and workers need to be very ethical. A small mistake can take someone’s life. Personal values of all the workers can be different from each other and they can also be different with the values of support in health and social care sector. Personal values include your religious or cultural beliefs and it is not that all the workers will be having the same religion or culture. Principles of support always say that each and every patient should be considered and treated equally. There should not be any discrimination on the basis of religion or culture. People come under pressure of earning more money and deviates from their values and principles. Principles of support teach workers to stay away from all these illusions. Doctors or nurses take a hypocrite oath according to which saving a patient is their responsibility and it is above all the other responsibilities. Sometimes doctors and nurses have to forget their personal lives to work for the patients. We know a legendary woman named Mother Teresa who has spent her entire life in serving the poor people. She has always given priority to delivering the best services to the patients. She did not marry and she knew that marriage will not allow her to focus on the path she is following. Husband and children becomes priority after marriage. Principle of support also believes in respecting each and every one equally irrespective of their caste, race or religion.
Click to know Role of Communication in Health and Social care organizations

1.2 Assess how personal culture and experience influence own role in supporting users of services and others in health and social care settings

Personal culture and experience in life plays a very important role in deciding the attitude of the doctor, nurse or any other worker in health and social care sector. The way a person has been treated or taught in his past life always gets reflected in his personal life. Upbringing of any individual decides his attitude towards everyone. If the doctor or nurse has been stayed in a very cordial, friendly and helpful environment they will always be very helpful and caring towards their patient. Culture and experiences also includes the family of any individual. Nature of your parents will reflect in you. Parents should always teach their children to be helpful and caring towards everyone in the society. Belief and ethnicity are also part of our culture (Scott, 2003). Workers in health and social care sector should also believe that all the patients are equal and they should not prioritize or discriminate on the basis of religion or money. We have also seen that hospitals have become like any other industries where the main motive is to earn as much money as possible. But in health and social care sector the main objective should be to serve people and care them. And this can come from the culture and experience of the workers. Education also decides on the behaviour of workers towards the patients. Education definitely affects our role in supporting users of health and social care sector. Education system should focus more on developing values and principles which are beneficial for all the users of this sector. Even the sweeper of the hospital should be given equal respect. Lifetime events also make our experience and our past experience can be seen in our behaviour towards the patients in social and health care sector.

1.3 Discuss how new developments and changes to personal values can impact on work in health and social care

As we have seen that how the personal values and principles affect the workers attitude towards the patient. So there is a great need of developing and changing the values of all the workers towards their patients. Training should be given all the new joiners to change their attitude, values and principles. Training should focus on respect and equality to every patient and all the other workers in the sector. Ethical behaviour needs to be taught to everyone. This training will be very helpful for the betterment of the patients and also for the reputation of the organization.
Everyone carries his attitude because of his culture and past experience. This has made people judgmental towards particular person. For e.g. a person who thinks that a person who speaks less is always good and caring and he might generalize this thing for everyone. This stereotype thinking of the social and healthcare workers need to be changed and developed. This will generate a very good environment in the organization. New developments can be done by introducing new legislations and laws. For e.g. there should be a strict law and punishment for any kind discrimination in the sector. All the patients should be given equal opportunity to get treated in a best way. Even each organization should treat some poor people free. All the workers should respect each other’s values and principles. Principles of good practice need to be implemented in any organization which is working in this sector. This change and development can be done internally and by the will power of the workers in the health and social care sector.

As I have already discussed my strengths and weaknesses. Now in this I will develop a plan for my development as a professional. My plan will focus on my weaknesses and will set up short medium and long term goals for myself. There are four learning styles given by Honey and Mumford (Honey, 2003). Four learning styles are activist, theorist, pragmatist and reflector. I will follow activist learning style for the development of my career. By following activist learning style I can learn while working. I need to work under an experienced professional in the social and health care sector. I need to be proactive and take extra responsibilities. It will also give me opportunity to take part in role plays, competitions, brain storming etc. Problem solving techniques can be developed by following this learning style. It gives an opportunity to learn the team building and leadership qualities. I will also be able to improve my communication skills which are one of my weaknesses.
My short term goal is to join one of the reputed organizations where I can get more learning opportunities. My short term goals also include getting rid of my two weaknesses which are communication skills and nervousness. I will attend training sessions and courses on communication skills. In my work environment also I will learn from my seniors. Meditation and stress relieving activities will help me in being more confident in my profession. I will try to speak more in public. It will improve my communication skills and also help me in getting rid of nervousness. Leadership qualities are not easy to gain and I will put it in my long term goals. I would try to be at a senior position after five or seven years in an organization with a team working under me. This will give me an opportunity to be a very good leader.

2.3 Monitor progress against the plan according to the requirements of a social and health care practitioner and revise the plan as required

Monitoring and reviewing the performance is very important to achieve your goals. In most of the organizations we have performance appraisal system in which we set or goals and targets for next six months and one year. We also set up the paths to achieve these goals like attending training sessions or meeting with different types of patients. This performance is reviewed by the seniors at the end of the period and then on the basis of our performance our goals or development plans are modified. For e.g. if I am not able to be good in my communication skills after one year period then next year I will have to attend more sessions on communication skills. It means my goals will be increased and I have to work hard. Progress can also be monitored by dividing my goals into smaller sub sections and set up goals for every week and at the end of the week I will analyse my performance in the last week and set up new goals for the next week. I will prepare a checklist and where I will mark if I was successful in achieving my goals in last week.

2.4 Evaluate the effectiveness of the development plan to own development as a social and health care practitioner

Development plan is very important and effective for improving your performance in any field. Effectiveness can be evaluated by considering all the stakeholders like doctors, patients, other staff members etc. I will take their suggestions in developing the plan and in evaluating the effectiveness of the plan. We also need to find out some qualitative measures which can be used to measure the performance after implementing the development plan.  These outcome measures should be valid, reliable and aligned to the goals and targets in the development plan. During the process I need to take steps to make sure that results are according to the planning. All these steps and initiatives will definitely help in my development as a practitioner in social and health care sector. My improvement will get reflected in the performance of the organization also in the satisfaction level of the patients.

Task 3

3.1 Explain the nature of different professional relationships in health and social care contexts

In social and health care sector relationships are very important. Health and social care sector does not only include doctors but there are other extraordinary staff members which are there to provide best available services. These doctors cannot only take care of their patients. They need to have nurses, clerks, and sweepers etc. to do their jobs efficiently in social and health care sector. Other members of the support staff are team of nurses, orderlies, management team and staff to take care of cleanliness. All the staff members have to coordinate with each other and have a strong relationship with each to run the hospitals smoothly. Each and every member should know his roles and responsibilities and work together for a common goal. The common goal is the customer satisfaction. Some of the important professional relationships in social and health care sector are as follows:
Between the doctors:
In a hospital we can find out various types of doctors. There will be physicians, dentists and heart specialists. All the specialists need to have respect for each other and there should be not any feeling of jealousy or competition. When a new patient comes he will first go to the general physician and if physician found something related to heart or and other body he will refer the patient to that doctor. So if there is some feeling of competition and jealously he may mislead the patient and an innocent patient will suffer. They all have to put the patient on priority list and they should not involve in any kind of unethical practices.
Between Doctors and Nurses:
Nurses are like backbone to the doctors. Doctors’ efficiency increases with the help of an efficient nurse. Doctor can see more patients if he has got a talented nurse. Nurses have to take care of the routine of the patients like which medicine to give at what time. In case of emergency they also have knowledge of this field and they can take the necessary actions. Doctors and nurses have to respect each other because they are dependent on each other. Doctors have to give respect, acknowledge and praise the work done by the nurses.
Between Doctors/Nurses and support staff:
Support staff is very important for the proper and smooth functioning of things in hospital. All the sweepers, clerks and orderlies are included in the support staff. Orderlies are there to keep the environment clean so they should get equal respect as compared to any other staff member in the organization.

3.2 Evaluate personal effectiveness in promoting and supporting the rights of the individual

Making use of your talents and abilities to achieve some objective or goal is called personal effectiveness (Liberman, 1975). A person’s personal qualities and external environment works together to make the whole organization effective. In this case we are talking about supporting the rights of the individual. In social and health care sector rights of the patients and the orderlies like sweepers who take care of cleanliness in the hospital should be taken care. Personal effectiveness can be used to support these individuals. Personal effectiveness can be used to generate confidence in yourself and also in the individuals around you.
We need to understand the factors which motivate and inspire us to work hard. The most important thing is the respect. All the patients and support staff workers should be given proper respect so that they do not feel inferior while working. All the individuals have rights to be equal to everyone. By giving respect we can preserve their rights. Money is the other motivator. All the employees should be given decent salary to run their homes. Government has laws according to which there will be a minimum which has to be paid for a particular job level.
As the name of the sector has word “Care” in it. This care is not only applicable to the patients but all the staff members should also be given proper care. Their health should be given preference. They should get proper time to spend with their families and for rest. Al the above points will surely help in promoting and supporting the rights of the individual in social and health care sector.

3.3 Discuss ways to resolve issues encountered in professional relationships

Wherever we have more people there are chances of conflicts but the most important thing is to resolve the conflicts (Lin, 1998). Conflicts arise when there are confusion in the roles and responsibilities. There will be a hierarchy in an organization and senior will give orders to juniors. Seniors have to be polite and juniors have to understand their roles and responsibilities to avoid any issues in the work environment. Below are some of the ways which can be used to avoid conflicts in work environment.
Proper Communication Channels:
Lack of communication is the major reason behind the conflicts. Communication to share the information is very important. There needs to be proper channel of communication to share the information and whenever there is any conflict for e.g. between the two nurses, doctors or anyone senior should make them communicate with each other and get onto a solution to the problem.
Training of the staff members:
Employees should be trained properly regarding their jobs. In their training itself their roles and responsibilities should be made clear so that in future there should not be any conflicts on the name of roles and duties. If everyone performs his roles then there will not be any scope for the conflicts. There should also be some training sessions to show the importance of respecting each other and avoiding any conflicts.
Committees to take disciplinary actions:
There needs to be committees in any hospital to finally resolve the conflict between two parties. They are the last option. If the two parties are not able to solve their issue themselves then disciplinary committee has to interfere and come up with a solution which is good for both the parties.
Mediator:
In this case a third party comes into picture to solve the conflicts of two parties. These mediators can be internal or from the outside also. Advocates can also be used for this purpose. It is one of the best ways to resolve the disputes. Both the parties are allowed to present their points and case in front of the mediator. The mediator should be respected by both the parties and his decision should be accepted by everyone.

Task 4

4.1 Evaluate the effectiveness of personal contributions when working with others in health and social care practice

Personal contributions are very important for the well-functioning of the entire team. Personal contributions can modify the entire team with whom we work in health and social care sector (Borrill, 2004). Below are some of the personal contributions which are very important:
  • Personal values and experiences of a person are very important. These values and principles decide the attitude of a person towards the other team members. Interests and hobbies of the person can create a friendly environment in the team.
  • Culture and past of the person also shapes the environment in a team. Education, family and upbringing of the person get reflected in the teams’ performance. Good education and upbringing teach us to treat everyone with respect and equally.
  • Person can also contribute by teaching others without the feeling of jealously or competition. If we have some knowledge in specific field we need to teach other team members also to make them effective. This will reflect your leadership qualities.
  • We also need to be helpful to the team members. Even if some is facing a personal problem everyone in the team should come forward and contribute in solving his issues. Work wise also everyone should help each other. If someone is absent on a day other person should take his responsibilities for that day.

4.2 Explain how the limits of own work role impacts on work with others

Everyone has some roles and responsibilities defined in the organization and there are some limits to these roles. For e.g. only the chief medical officer will be able to have access to the confidential data of the hospital. All the other employees like doctors or nurses do not have access to that information. Let us suppose in case of emergency we need that information and that is also urgent. A patient’s life depends upon that information about the medical procedure. Chief Medical officer is not available on that day. It may create disturbance in the hospital and among the team members. We need to call the officer and try to get the information and it will take time. This way limit to you job role affects the work in the organization. Patients will lose their confidence among the doctors and nurses. Limits on the work role create dependency on each other. A sweeper role will not be played by the doctor or a sweeper will not be able to play the role of a doctor. Hence all the employees in an organization are like a team. Each one should be dedicated to their jobs and duties. They should work together towards the common goal and this way we can surpass the limits of our work role. All the functions and departments in the organization will run smoothly.

4.3 Analyse own role in minimizing barriers to effective teamwork in health and social care practice

We will definitely face some barriers while working in a team. I will handle these barriers and will play a significant role in minimizing these roles. Some of the steps which can be taken are as follows:
Better communication channels: When the required information is not shared then we face barriers in the functioning of a team. A proper communication channel should be set up in the organization. There should be proper ways for all three types of communication. The three types are upward, downward and horizontal communication.
Knowing each other personally: Knowing your team member personally also helps in working in a very efficient way. We can know the strengths and weaknesses of our team partners. Working with someone new takes time to adjust. If we know someone personally we will take responsibilities in his absence and this will be helpful in better service to the patients (Mickan, 2005).
Fun Activities: Human resource department of an organization should organize some fun activities in the organization. In this way employees will be able to know each other and they will also feel fresh. It will increase the efficiency of the team members also of the entire team.
Training all the employees about the roles and responsibilities will also help in minimizing the barriers in team work.

4.4 Discuss how to improve personal contributions to the collective effectiveness of a team.

For the effectiveness of a team each and every member has to contribute in some way (Lemieux-Charles, 2006). As we have already discussed that personal contributes can shape the entire team thus I will suggest some of the following ways by which each and every one can contribute in the effective of a team:
No Discrimination : All the team members will be from different religion, caste, race, age, sex etc. Everyone has to respect each other’s personal lives and there should not be any discrimination towards anyone.
Proactive actions : Each and every one should take proactive actions to complete their roles and responsibilities. Sometimes job of one team member depends on the job of other. So we should finish our task on time so that other person can also proceed and the whole task can be finished in the give time.
Motivating each other : Job in this sector is not easy. Employees have to go through many emotional issues and it may lead to stress. So all the team members should become each other’s support and motivate each other to perform better.
